G-42 German Equatorial Telescope Mount

This mount is the solution for either a small to medium observatory or a portable, yet stable and precise tracking platform. It offers a backlash free, smooth motion in both axes. The slip clutch fastens gradually and the clutch handle itself is adjustable. The controls are straightforward and easy to access. The stability is exceptional considering the head weight. The GoTo capability is limited by considerations of mechanical wear only: with a 24V power supply speeds of 6 deg/sec (with Pulsar) are normal. The tube/counterweight ratio is exceptionally good, which means that your equipment will be balanced with the minimum amount of counterweight. Only high quality materials are used for a completely "stainless" design.
Web forum: for G41/42 users
The design concept of the G-42 Obs+ is the result of 10 years of R&D and user feedback on previous models. It offers first class tracking quality, simple use and outstanding reliability.
The G-42 Obs+ has CNC machined high grade anodised aluminium main structural elements and shafts. Both axes are held securely by 2pc oversized tapered roller bearings (each have over 600 kg loading capacity). The worm supports are spring loaded so that you never have backlash. The polar scope is attached to the DEC head by a 300mm long beam to provide confortable sighting under all conditions and at far Northern/southern latitudes. All necessary cable connections are wired into a single DB15 connector placed close to the center of rotation which means minimum cable problem during goto.
Main features of the G-42 Observatory + (when used with Pulsar2 driver)

The GHS MkII tripod is the ideal solid base for your G-42. It ensures that stability is not compromised by wobbling tripod legs…The MkII model has 8 cm independent leg adjustment, d120x5mm central pier, d 60x5mm legs and a legendary stability confirmed by many satisfied customers. The Qlock system saves you a lot of frustration in the dark - you just put the mount head on, turn a handknob on the pier and it's done.

1.: For permanent setup the G-42 is supplied with M10 Allen head screws instead of the handknob (elevation lock). This allows for more overhang after passing the meridian. Hexagonal key size:8mm. For more information see the manual!
2.: For higher GoTo speeeds (above cca.3deg/sec) the Pulsar 24V transverter model is recommended.
An alternative solution is to use a 24V power supply.
The unique Direct Drive System provides you with complete freedom from backlash and the large periodic error associated with gear trains. The mount reacts to your commands instantly - just as you would expect from a high precision drive system. It uses the possible smallest number of parts - as a result it is reliable and compact. Another benefit of the Direct Drive System is the high slewing speed of the stepper motors. To see some results with Gemini mounts either look at the Gemini Gallery or see one of our customer's sites!
The original Gemini polar scope uses three stars for alignment for high precision and freedom from reading star charts. You just find the position when the three circles on the reticle match the stars. It is more accurate than traditional "Star Drift" methods. The large 30mm objective lens lets you see enough stars for a precise alignment. The 12x magnification provides the accuracy needed for GoTo and astrophotography. Collimation and alignment are explained in a short video – download (3M) video.
We have developed a new PE testing unit that allows us to workbench test the mounts before shipping. The PE diagram is supplied with the mount. To see an example click here! (. Small scale ripple in the diagram is the result of rounding errors in calculations. )
